As global companies address carbon emissions, Scope 3 emissions have become a significant barrier, particularly for TSMC, a leader in the semiconductor industry. As the world's largest semiconductor foundry, TSMC's supply chain involves numerous upstream suppliers and downstream customers, with Scope 3 emissions accounting for the majority of its total carbon footprint. Given the energy and chemical-intensive nature of semiconductor manufacturing, TSMC needs to closely collaborate with suppliers to ensure that the production processes of its raw materials and intermediate products meet sustainability standards. Specifically, TSMC's supply chain dependency can be described as: chemicals and silicon wafers (resources/raw materials) → semiconductor wafers (intermediate products) → electronics manufacturers (downstream enterprises). To effectively reduce Scope 3 emissions, TSMC must select suppliers with strong sustainability reports during procurement and promote transparency within its supply chain to better track and manage carbon emissions. This not only helps TSMC achieve its decarbonization goals but also reduces operational costs and enhances the company's market competitiveness.
